Dear Cynthia:

I am going through a divorce, and the stress is affecting my energy level. All the important decisions to consider, the emotions I experience, trying to make sure the kids are OK, and dealing with my soon-to-be-ex is just too much. I am not sleeping or eating well.

I find myself coming home and not having enough energy to do anything other than tossing a frozen pizza in the oven for the kids and vegging on the couch with a glass (or two or three) of wine. I don’t think I can take much more of this, but we have just started negotiating the Property Settlement Agreement with no end in sight. Help.

Sincerely, This Divorce Is Killing Me

Dear This Divorce Is Killing Me:

To say that divorce is stressful is like saying a tornado is just a little bit of wind. This type of daily stress can take a toll on every aspect of yourself – especially physically. Now is the time to do the opposite of what your body is telling you to do.

Your body will be screaming for caffeine and sugar to balance the stress, but please don’t listen. What your body NEEDS is healthy and clean. Shop in the outer isles of the grocery store and get rid of as much processed foods and sugar as you can from your diet. Go through your pantry and freezer. Throw out all sweets, snacks, and processed foods. Get a crock pot and start making your dinners from scratch. I LOVE my crock pot! You can put meals together in 15 minutes in the morning and come home to a healthy and delicious meal for your whole family. It is the time to nourish your body with yummy, healthy food, not the time for fad diets

walkdogsCombat the emotional and mental stress of divorce by exercising. Your body will tell you just to sit on the couch. But what your body needs is to MOVE. If you can hire a trainer, do it. If you can’t, don’t worry. Go to your closet, put on your sneakers, put a leash on your fat dog and walk a mile or two. Your fat dog (or your neighbor’s fat dog) is the best workout buddy because they always want to go for a walk. They are never under the weather or in a bad mood. No dogs around? Walk with your kids. Walk your fat cat. Just WALK.

Eating better and exercising will help you sleep better at night and keep your immune system up and running. It will get your systems moving so that you don’t add weight gain and constipation to your mix of things to deal with during your divorce. The walking will also help you find clarity for the decisions you need to make. Walking will work off some of the anger, resentment and frustration you will experience during this messy, emotional time.

Blessings
